A 3, 4 or 5 digit number (item code) which may be followed by 1 to 4 additional digits which modify the specification. The entire string may have a following alphabetic letter (finish code). For searching there are dashes between each element. For example, 6031-8-8-4 is a proper search code. Note that in the ELK catalog the dashes may be slashes or pluses. The catalog code for the item above is 6031/8+8+4 but for searching the special characters have been changed to dashes. Not all codes have modifiers and can be simply a 3 to 5 digit number.

The first is 4 numbers (category code) which may be followed by a W indicating wet location use. the second group has an (item code) of 3 or 4 alphabetic characters followed by a dash then a 4 number code. All of this may be followed by a W signifying wet locations. Valid codes would be 5290 or 5290W in the numeric group. Valid codes for the alpha group would be FAL-4705 or FAL-4705W
